Training
Every bartender goes through a six week training programme before certification to ensure consistency in all aspects of service and product. This level of training means that enthusiasm and the right attitude are more important than previous experience.
Staff Development
Our commitment to staff development through team meetings, quarterly reviews and one-on-one feedback creates opportunities and encourages upward mobility at all levels. Most members of the team stay for at least two years. In the past ten years six of our employees have gone on to open their own bars.
Guy – one of our Assistant General Managers
My name is Guy and I was hired to be a Manager for B@1, something that until then had never happened before given the emphasis on internal merit based promotion. As the company continues to grow I was attracted to the opportunities available from an industry leading brand, a chance to work for the best once I had completed the Bartender training and certification, as well as the Key Skills Management course.
Before my interview I of course paid a visit to one of the bars to reacquaint myself with the business. The second I stepped inside the bar in Covent Garden I was greeted with a beaming smile and a friendly “How you doing?” from Johan. I propped myself up by the bar with a critical eye and ordered my Old Fashioned. The service was impeccably friendly and efficient, every person in the room including the Bartenders were having an awesome time. Plus my drinks were spot on. I was sold. This was the company I wanted to work for.
I attended the same training classrooms as the bartenders. B@1 Managers are hands on and lead from the front so it was imperative I certified to proceed to the next step of my training. Having trained bartenders myself it was fantastic to go through this process and to be retrained to the high standard which is required. Over the following weeks I completed my training which was arduous and rewarding with support and encouragement from my trainer. I can honestly say after eight years in this industry I have never seen the same level of investment in the staff of a company, a true sign of a business understanding that the staff are the most important asset.
To be surrounded by professionals who take great pleasure and pride in their work is an absolute joy, having had other jobs where there have been individuals who let the side down, from managers to glass collectors, it is refreshing to no longer be in that unfavourable position.
I look forward to one day leading a team for B@1 and having the pride and ownership I have become accustomed to during my time here.

Hi girls and guys! My name is Quentin and I’m from France. I have worked as a bartender in |B@1 Hammersmith for almost a year now! When I look back, it’s amazing for me to realise how my life has changed!
I finished my studies when I was 19 and thought it could be good for me to go to London. After spending a year working in a lounge bar/club I decided to improve my level of bartending which was ridiculous.
From the first day, all the B@1 team welcomed me though my English wasn’t fantastic and I didn’t have many bartending skills. The first 3 months were very hard for me and I wouldn’t have stayed if the atmosphere wasn’t so great!
Because B@1 is all about this, everyday customers have a good time because of the bartenders! What nice feedback to be surrounded with! As a bartender, you make the party and meet lots of people who become real friends!
From the owner to your colleague, you always push yourself to learn more and more: practicing flair, learning new cocktails, attending spirit testing, training new people and, like I’m learning now, management!
